Why Doodles are Different?

  • They’re often described that way — but it’s not the full picture.

They’re intelligent and food motivated, which absolutely helps with training. But they’re also sensitive, easily overstimulated, and quick to pick up habits (both good and bad).

With the right approach, they can be brilliant to train. Without it… things can feel chaotic quite quickly.

  • Because you’ve probably been given a slightly simplified version of the breed.

Recent UK research found that Doodle crosses (like Cockapoos and Labradoodles) were more likely to show unwanted behaviours than many other dogs — especially things like overexcitement, barking, and poor impulse control (Royal Veterinary College (RVC).

So if your dog feels like “a lot” — you’re not imagining it.

  • It usually comes down to a mix of:

    • High energy

    • Overstimulation

    • Not enough structured rest

    • Not yet knowing how to switch off

Many Doodles don’t naturally “self-settle” — it’s something we have to actively teach.

  • This is one of the most common struggles.

Puppies explore the world with their mouths — but with Doodles, it’s often made worse by excitement, frustration, and tiredness.

It’s not aggression — it’s a lack of impulse control and regulation (which we can absolutely teach).

  • Because most advice is written for the “average dog” — and Doodles aren’t average in how they learn or respond.

    They need:

    • Clear structure

    • Consistency

    • The right balance of stimulation and rest

    • Training that takes their sensitivity and intelligence into account

  • Some things improve with age — but most behaviours (like pulling, barking, jumping, ignoring recall) don’t just disappear on their own.

Dogs do more of what works.
So without training, those habits tend to stick.

  • Not trying to fix everything at once.

    Start with:

    • Routine (especially sleep and downtime)

    • Engagement (getting your dog to focus on you)

    • Simple impulse control

Once those foundations are in place, everything else becomes much easier.

  • You can absolutely make progress on your own — especially with the right guidance.

But if you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or like nothing is working, getting the right support early can save you a lot of time (and frustration).

If your Doodle is pulling, barking, overexcited or just not listening — you’re not alone, and you’re not doing anything wrong. You can get my Doodle Training Guide which is the only training system written specifically for doodles or book in a free consutation below.
